Syncronized Swimming

Kylee and Megan did Synchronized swimming again this year. It is the one thing that keeps us from being completely lazy all summer long. They divide the team up into two broad age groups for practices and meets and since Kylee was 11 this summer she ended up being in the older age range. That meant different practice times and twice as many meets to attend. It was all worth it and I think I would have a hard time finding another activity that would get my kids out of bed, willingly, before 7am. They absolutely love synchronized swimming and I love that they are confident swimmers and I can therefore take all my kids to the pool by myself and only have to focus on making sure the youngest doesn't drown.

They spend a lot of time at the beginning of the summer learning how to do the different synchronized swimming moves, called figures. Then at the end of the season they get to put those moves together and swim as small and large groups to music. It is the highlight of the year for my girls. The do duets and trios which as you can imagine are teams with two or three in them and then they have larger team routines which are anywhere from 5 to 10 girls all swimming together. They also get to put together fun costumes to wear while they preform these routines. As you can imagine it is tricky to come up with costumes which can be worn in water and do not interfere with the performances. This year, by shear coincidence both of my girls ended up wearing grass skirts for costumes. Kylee's duet swam to Hawaiian Roller coaster from the Lelo and Stich movie so the grass skirt just made the most sense. Megan's trio routine involved the "I like to move it, move it" song from the Madigascar movie. We had a harder time figuring out what to do with that, but decided that King Julian from that movie wears a grass skirt and crown so we went with it.

Kylee's team routine also placed second for there age group. They beat out 6 or 7 other teams and came really close to first place. Kylee is in the back, 3rd from the left.
